Avoid the Perils of "Card-Not-Present" Transactions

Each year, retailers are collectively charged nearly $1 Billion as a result of fraudulent card transactions. Theses are charges that come out of your pocket and affect your bottom line. Even worse, standard security measures like AVS and CVC are insufficient in fully protecting you against fraud.

Did you know....

  • $3.6 billion in online revenues were lost due to online fraud in 2007, up from $3.1 billion in 2006.
  • In 2007, the percentage of accepted orders which were later determined to be fraudulent was 1.3%, up from 1.1% in 2006.
  • The fraud risk on international orders is over 250% more than that of domestic orders.
  • In 2007, the median value of a fraudulent order was $200 compared to $120 median value reported for valid orders.

Merchant Alarm provides enhanced protection against fraudulent credit card transactions on the spot. Powered by CardCops – an international leader in card fraud monitoring – Merchant Alarm provides an effective, cost-efficient solution which helps close the gaps left by traditional security measures.

::: Tips to Reduce Chargebacks :::

  1. Verify the customer’s address and CVC with the issuing bank, or via your Voice Authorization Center.
  1. Check the user’s IP address location with the card billing address.  If the user’s location is not close to the card billing address, call the customer to verify their order.
  1. Use caution when processing large, foreign orders.  While fraud can occur virtually anywhere, orders from Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Asia are often considered to be of higher risk.
  1. Take added precautions when processing orders with a domestic billing address and foreign mailing address.
  1. Charge a customer’s card only when an order ships.
  1. Use a clear DBA name on your billing statements. Unrecognized DBAs are one of the most common causes of chargebacks. Placing a phone number on your customer’s statements also provides an easy method for customers to confirm that their purchase is indeed valid.
  1. Use Merchant Alarm to alert you to potentially fraudulent card usage before processing the sale.
